This beautiful style of Navajo art is called horse hair pottery because actual horse hair is added to the pottery at just the right moment in the firing process to melt the hairs into the pottery, creating stunning and unique designs. This piece of pottery was Navjo hand etched and painted, by artist Al, with a beautiful bear paw and other traditional designs. In Native American beliefs, the bear symbolizes physical strength, leadership, and is known as the "first helper". The bear paw is usually considered a way to call for the power of the animal spirit, or as an indication of the presence of the spirit. It is a symbol that represents inner strength.
