The Navajo tribe is the largest Native American tribe in the entire United States Southwest region. Navajo jewelry and art has a long history, as the tribe was formed from a variety of nomadic peoples of different backgrounds. The cultural development of the Navajo people relied heavily on the creation and refinement of their jewelry and art.

One definite trait of Navajo jewelry is in the intricacy and detailing in the beading and carving of adornments. Most focus on silver or metal formations that divert from the normal shapes. Historically, the Navajo artists have focused on organic shapes decorated with gemstones that haven’t been refined into a traditional image. In pre-Colonial years, Navajo jewelry was easily identified by its abnormal but aesthetically pleasing formations.

As Navajo jewelry became more of a commodity (in both trade and wear), the style expanded to include more elements from Mexico. Beading, layering, and finer silver-smith work was incorporated more often into necklaces, belt buckles, and more. These elements are still present in Navajo jewelry today.
